GCSE students were jumping for joy this morning as they celebrated another year of outstanding GCSE results with 81% of students achieving five or more GCSEs at grades 9 – 4 (A*-C equivalent).

The school recorded its highest ever percentage of top grades, with 54% of all students securing at least one grade 9-7 (A*-A equivalent). These exceptional results continue to buck a national trend that suggests a fall in the number of students achieving higher grades.

Amongst the headlines were some amazing individual academic successes with seventeen students achieving grades 9-7 (A*-A equivalent) in all of their GCSEs, with many now continuing their academic journey through the school’s sixth form for their A Levels. There were also some phenomenal personal achievements with 70% of students securing results above and beyond their predicted grades, creating strong foundations which will help enable them to unlock the future of their choosing.

Beth C and Oliver L led the way by each securing a staggering nine grade 9s across all subjects. Henry B-R, Beth C, Jess C, Orlagh F, Oliver L, Pollyanne L, Seb M, Dieter M, John P, Naomi P, Sarah P, Noah R, Oliwia S, Jemima S, Edward S, Hamish T and Olivia T all achieved grades 9-7 (A*-A equivalent) in all of their GCSEs making them some of the highest achieving students nationally.

Twins, Hamish and Olivia, managed to achieve a total of 18 GCSEs – all at the highly coveted 9-7 grade (A*-A equivalent) with almost half at the highest possible grade 9. They will now continue their studies alongside friends at The New Sixth.

Ms Ann Cusack, Headmistress, was thrilled, saying: “Huge congratulations must go to all of our students on their well-deserved achievements today. The students have worked incredibly hard and made the most of all the opportunities at Saint Gregory’s. I am confident they are absolutely ready for the exciting adventures and challenges that will be offered as they continue their education into our sixth form and beyond.”

“Our students have not only risen to the challenge of tougher exams, but also earned grades at a truly exceptional level. Every year the results and percentages only tell part of the story and, whilst the grades demonstrate unequivocal success, behind each set of figures or statistics there is a young person who has achieved so much more, both inside the classroom and beyond. We celebrate the successes of each and every one of our students who have dedicated so much to their studies and school-life. Our thanks must also go to our amazing team of staff who have been so influential in ensuring another year of exceptional outcomes.”

Core curriculum subjects were amongst the highest achieving with students excelling in Science, Mathematics and English, despite the higher degree of challenge and rigour. STEM subjects performed exceptionally well with almost 90% of Sciences securing 9-4 (A*-C equivalent) grades whilst 82% of all Mathematics entries were awarded grade 9-4. English students faired equally impressively with 80% of all grades at 9-4 with a quarter achieving the top results 7-9 (A*-A equivalent).

Saint Gregory’s strongly advocates a safe and inclusive environment for learning where students feel valued as individuals, inspired to extend, challenge and equip themselves to achieve new goals and develop a life-long love of learning so that their school experience is not a two-dimensional exam factory. The 2019 GCSE and A level results demonstrate unequivocally that it is possible to both secure the highest levels of attainment whilst also retaining an environment that ensures students grow into well-rounded, reflective, caring and thoughtful young people and we couldn’t be prouder!
