Mandarin Excellence Programme

Saint Gregory’s also holds full accreditation of the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of our work to bring the world into the classroom and educate young people about their global community. Our international programmes provide students with an impactful approach to learning and enable students to have great fun as they develop new language skills and experience new cultures.

The Mandarin Excellence Programme is a government funded initiative to boost the teaching of Mandarin in UK schools. Launched in 2016, the programme sought out schools with a proven track record in Mandarin teaching and an excellent Ofsted rating to join the programme.

The intensive language programme is being delivered by the UCL Institute of Education in partnership with the British Council and, nationally, will see at least 5,000 school students in England on track towards fluency in Mandarin Chinese by 2020. Saint Gregory’s is one of only 37 state schools across the country to be selected to join the programme.

The aim is for students on the programme to attain a high level of fluency in this key global language through intensive programmes of study, cultural activities and a trip to China for a summer school course at the end of Year 8.

Saint Gregory’s offers all Year 7 students a chance to learn Mandarin in their first term at the school as part of a carousel of languages. In December, those students who wish to be considered for the programme will be given the option to choose Mandarin as their main foreign language. They will continue to study Mandarin on timetable and also take part in afterschool activities, cultural programmes and other exciting activities that will boost their language learning and deepen their knowledge of China and Chinese culture.

The Mandarin Excellence Programme reflects the international ethos that is embedded throughout Saint Gregory’s, promoting international partnerships and providing students with a vibrant and stimulating curriculum with opportunities to broaden and enhance their creative and communication skills to meet the needs of an ever-changing world.
