On Wednesday evening we celebrated our annual Advent Carol Service at St John’s RC Church along with our feeder primary school St John’s.

The liturgy began in eerie darkness with the one lone voice of the first verse of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ following the opening reading from the prophet Isaiah. We then listened to the readings of the Old Testament full of prophesies of the coming Messiah intertwined with music led by a very strong and confident orchestra.

As we heard the familiar Christmas story read wonderfully by both St Gregory’s and St John’s students and staff, our choirs and musicians from both schools led us in rousing Carols such as Hark the herald, O Holy Night and O Little Town of Bethlehem. The Church was absolutely packed to the rafters and full of Christmas joy. We hope the liturgy did credit to the season of Advent and helped so many engage with the journey from darkness to light that is presented to us. A huge thank you to all our musicians, music and performing art staff and peripatetic teachers who worked so hard to make the service a success.
