Called to Action

‘Called to Action’, young volunteer group help the homeless

Our Year 10 Young Volunteer group spent a day reflecting on the mission of the SVP (St Vincent De Paul society) before Christmas when they met up with likeminded students from other schools in our diocese. The SVP vision, inspired by Christ’s message, to love our neighbour as ourselves, for individuals and families who are in any form of need, to have hope, together with a sense of dignity, worth, well-being and peace of mind.  Set the challenge to look for the need to look for poverty, whatever guise it takes in our own community and area, the young volunteers focused on how Bath is heaving with shoppers in December. However, January, when the cold and rain really set in, brings about less donations and care for those who are on the streets.

Therefore, our students decided to fundraise during advent so that come January they would be able to cook and distribute hot meals around the city. Their fundraising brought in lots of money thanks to a Christmas treat sale and Santa's grotto.

Last Thursday, as the wind and rain were at a horrid peak, the group cooked pasta and Bolognese dishes in school. They then walked around the city centre finding so many homeless doing their best to settle from the abysmal weather in doorways and alcoves. I was incredibly proud of the maturity and kindness shown by the students. They took time to speak with many homeless people and showed compassion and support in the way they interacted.
