Chaplain's Reflections - 5th June 2026

Education gives people a greater freedom of choice and the ability to open up avenues and doors to their own future.

This week we were delighted to welcome Br John Deeney to St Gregory’s to speak to our Year 12s about Lasallian Projects.  Br John, one of our district brothers from Oxford, has spent decades forging links with rural communities in Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, India and beyond so that the charity, Lasallian Projects, can give young people the opportunity to volunteer in these special places. At the heart of the mission is Education.  Br John spoke to our Year 12s at length about the power of education as the single biggest weapon against inequality, poverty and injustice.   Education gives people a greater freedom of choice and the ability to open up avenues and doors to their own future.

Therefore, Lasallian Projects offers our students in the UK a volunteering experience for five weeks in the summer term to help build new schools in rural communities that we have Lasallian links with.  Br John showed us the hard work and dedication that previous volunteers had put in, the friendships and bonds created, plus the most incredible cultural experience living in the heart of these communities.  There are so many companies and charities who offer volunteering and humanitarian project experiences these days but Lasallian projects is connected to our school and mission, whilst also being considerably cheaper and longer than other opportunities out there.  Two years ago, one of our students, Josie, embraced this challenge by signing up and she never stops telling us about the life changing impact it had upon her.  We hope more students take up the challenge to have a positive impact on education around the world for the summer of 2027.  Details can be found at www.lasallianprojects.org .
