Why does excellent behaviour matter in a year where we are flourishing together in faith?
Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control."
Why does excellent behaviour matter in a year where we are flourishing together in faith? That is the question I have posed to our students this week and we have explored some of the possible answers, including the fact that excellent behaviour signifies respect to others, demonstrates accountability and self-control and tells us something about reputation, both on an individual and whole-school level.
My message is clear: poor behaviour at St Gregory's is not tolerated, especially if it disrupts the learning and progress of others. Instead, like in the passage from Galatians which I shared with students, the Holy Spirit fills us with virtues such as peace, goodness and gentleness which can be shown outwardly by having polite manners, wearing uniform correctly and being kind to all we meet. When I walk around the school I see so many brilliant examples of students displaying excellent behaviour, from opening doors for staff and other students to picking up lost property or helping others who may need support to wearing their uniform with pride. Most of our students get this right all the time and we love rewarding positive behaviour choices through our House Point system. We ask parents and carers to work with us to reinforce our Behaviour for Excellence policy which can be found on our website.
This week, Year 7 students left school for the day to take part in their first formation retreat with Mr Robinson. We are grateful to Fr Robert and the parish of St Alphege's for hosting our retreats again this year.
One of our netball teams kicked off the season with a fantastic result, beating Ralph Allen 24 to 9, congratulations to all who played and Emily C (9G) for being awarded Player of the Match.
Next week we have a series of Open Events to show prospective families around the school and showcase the hallmarks of a St Gregory's education. I know so many students are already looking forward to helping out at our Open Events; whether they are welcoming, speaking, guiding or supporting subject areas I know they will be wonderful ambassadors. The following week we are holding our Sixth Form Opening Evening on 8 October 6-8pm for all students in Year 10 and Year 11. We can't wait to show them what the New Sixth has to offer to help them prepare for their powerful future.
