God doesn't call us as young people through mobile phones or social media, God is calling us through others and for others.
"Remove the chains of oppression and the yoke of injustice, and let the oppressed go free. Share your food with the hungry and open your homes to the homeless poor. Give clothes to those who have nothing to wear, and do not refuse to help your own relatives." (Isaiah 58:6-7)
Over the last few weeks the fruits of the above scripture from Isaiah have been lived in our community. We received so many food donations to share with the Bath, Keynsham and Somer Valley food bank which they were immensely grateful for. We'd like to thank all the wider family of our school for ensuring we continue to have a positive impact upon our local community when they are in need. You can see from the picture just how much food was generously donated. For those who made donations online, we bought the items most required by the food bank on your behalf.
At the moment, eight of our 1719 Society Year 11 prefects are attending a Lasallian leadership programme in Staffordshire, exploring how they can be the changemakers to build a better world. Alongside 150 fellow student leaders from 17 different schools in our Lasallian district of Ireland, GB and Malta, our young people are blessed with this wonderful opportunity to be empowered and have an impact.
In the first twenty four hours they have listened to keynote speakers from two Lasallian brothers who have joined us from across the world to inspire a mission that is possible. Br Jorge from Spain used his unique style of blending a love of sci-fi, superheroes, academia and humour to draw an understanding of personal calling out of our students. He shared, "God doesn't call us as young people through mobile phones or social media, God is calling us through others and for others.".
On the first full day, Br Chris Patino continued this theme by exploring the pathway to building a more fraternal world, that is a world where we look after one another as brothers and sisters, and how our young people are the changemakers. He told the students gathered that they have a distinctive and unique perspective to respond to the concerns, issues and injustices of our world. Using the model of See, Judge, Act it propels us into the next part of our programme which will be allowing them to share with one another and discern how to create encounter, transform the encounter and put this into action and commitment to our neighbour. Br Chris's endorsement of the importance and mission of young people was captured in these words during his address, "Your youthfulness is a gift. Our Lasallian mission and the communities we call home need your dreams, passion and creativity."
We look forward to sharing more about the full conference and the plans our student leaders have after half term.
