Headteacher's Reflections - 5th September 2025

Welcome to a new school year

Welcome to a new school year and it is wonderful to see our community back together after a long summer break. We have welcomed our new Year 7 and new Year 12 cohorts and also students who are joining us in other year groups, as well as new staff.

In our first whole school assembly at the start of the year, I spoke to everyone about our new theme - Dare to be Glowing Saints - and have called on our community to work towards being more saintly this year, aspirational I know but aspiration is one of our core principles! Our patron, St Gregory, celebrated his feast day this week and we reflected on this remarkable man who turned from a life of wealth, power and privilege to living out his true vocation as a Benedictine monk before becoming Pope. In the first century he sent Augustine of Canterbury to England to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity and both saints are known for being Apostles of the English.

This Sunday, Blessed Carlo Acutis is going to be canonised and will become our first Millennial saint. This is exciting indeed and our young people are so lucky to be living in a time when a boy just like them - who liked fizzy drinks, Nutella and gaming but who also had a deep-rooted love for the Eucharist - will join the other saints in heaven. Do visit St John the Evangelist parish church in Bath this week to see Carlo Acutis' Exhibition of the Miracles which is touring the world and in Bath the week preceding his canonisation.

To launch our refreshed Mission Statement, I have set our students from Years 7-13 a challenge to design a piece of artwork to accompany the updated Mission. Students can find it in their handbooks and on the website: Our Mission, Creed & Values - St Gregory's Catholic College Bath. Submissions are due at the end of September, all details are on Memokeeper and good luck to all who choose to enter this competition. We hope to see the winning design on posters and our website in the near future.

Finally, it has been joyful to welcome new Year 7 families to our Induction Evening and community BBQ this week; we are looking forward to getting to know you over the next seven years of your child's educational journey with us and we value your support.

A polite reminder that parents/carers must not park in the road on our school grounds at drop off or pick up - it's dangerous and our school buses need this area every morning and evening. Please do not park in front of our neighbour's driveways either; we like to maintain positive relationships with our neighbouring community and it is disappointing when they email to say that parents/carers are parking inconsiderately. If you are dropping or collecting your child by car, please park in Odd Down Park and Ride and your child will walk the short distance to meet you there. Staff are on duty every morning and evening, including in the Park and Ride, to ensure everyone is safe.

I look forward to this academic year and what it may bring. We have celebrated the great success of our outgoing Year 13 and Year 11 students and I know there will be many more positive learning experiences and new adventures this year for the students who are still with us.

God bless!
