“nation shall not lift sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” (Micah 4:3-4)
Remembrance Commemorations
This week has been a special and poignant time for us, just as it always is each year across the globe as we remember all those who died as a result of the tragedy of war. In anticipation of our commemorations, each tutor group in the school have been preparing a poppy wreath which was brought forward in our Remembrance Masses and have gone up on display as giant wreaths in the hall. These act as a reminder during this month of remembrance to continue to pray for all those who have died in Christ and risen in glory and as a symbol of our hope that never again will war take the innocent lives of so many.
In assemblies, Mrs Sarbatta and Mr Nordberg spoke personally of their connection to family members in WWII and the deeper wounds the experience left upon them. As our collective worship focused on the need to support those who suffer from PTSD and other consequences of war in these days, we pray for a world of peace where people are no longer expected to fight for freedom, “nation shall not lift sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” (Micah 4:3-4). During our whole school Remembrance Masses we heard the passage from Luke 7 speaking of being ‘unworthy servants, only doing what was our duty.’ Fr Tibor reminded us that our lives are filled with those who are called to service, whether that’s the everyday of shopping or those who support us on transport, the medical or educational professionals are all serving one another in the way they are able. For the generations before us who were given little choice but to serve their country to protect the freedom of all, we commemorate the deep sacrifice they had to make.
Special thanks go to Fr Tibor and Fr Bill for celebrating Mass for the community, the Year 10 student who pierced the dull rainy morning with a perfect playing of the Last Post, all those who made the beautiful poppy wreaths and students who attended in their uniforms
Many represented St Gregory’s at the Firs Field Memorial Service, Combe Down.
