Two young volunteers from St Gregory’s who clear up rubbish from the River Avon have been celebrated for their exceptional contribution to the environment by Bath & North East Somerset Council as part of its Community Awards 2023/24.
Charles Alexander G M and Austin H, both Year 7 students, received their awards from Councillor Sarah Moore, Chair of the council during an assembly at the school.
The dynamic duo are dedicated to environmental causes and their commitment to cleaning up the river, specifically by collecting plastics and rubbish, caught the attention of the judging panel as outstanding contributors to the Young Volunteer of the Year category.
Beyond river conservation, the pair have also demonstrated a commitment to the environment, including protecting a swan’s nest against potential predators such as foxes and badgers. The judges noted that this approach to environmental care showcases the depth of their commitment to preserving local wildlife.
Councillor Sarah Moore said: “It is truly inspiring to witness the dedication of Charles and Austin to the well-being of our environment. Their tireless efforts, from cleaning up the river to actively contributing to wildlife preservation, embody the spirit of the Young Volunteer of the Year award.”
Charles said: “I’m happy to get this award and I will continue protecting Mother Nature. Floating trash and debris are bad for aquatic animals. I’m glad my dog, Black Pug Puggy, was helping as well. I have enjoyed my time with my friend Austin. I have received new badges from Scouts and got recognised for this environmental action.”
The ten winners of this year’s Community Awards were selected from nearly 60 nominations and were announced earlier this month.
